Golf Clubs, Golf Club Sets, and Ladies Golf Clubs

For some people, golf is nothing more than an excuse to hang out with friends, drink a few beers, and hit a ball around. Golf clubs are the tools of the trade for any golfer, amateur or professional. They are the means by which the ball is moved about the course, and without them, the game cannot be played. Up until just a few decades ago, most clubs were made with wooden shafts and rudimentary club heads. Today’s clubs, on the other hand, are much more technologically advanced. Many manufacturers use high-tech alloys and proprietary weighting systems and club faces to create clubs of exceptional performance.
Golf club sets typically consist of two basic categories of clubs; woods and irons. Woods are named such because the club head was traditionally made from wood. However, it is relatively rare to find a new “wood” that is truly made from wood. Most of these clubs today are made from some form of metal composite, which provide the ability to make much longer shots, on a more consistent basis. Hybrid designs are also becoming extremely popular, especially with amateur players, as they are easy to hit with and provide spectacular results even for a novice golfer.
Irons are the most numerous clubs in most golf club sets. In most cases, a golf bag will hold two, maybe three woods. However, it is not uncommon to see 4-8 irons in the average golf bag. The reason for this is that irons are designed for fairway play, in which there are literally an infinite number of possible shots that must be taken. Having a variety of irons in your bag ensures that you will have the right tool for most shots that will occur during a round of golf. The number on an iron indicates the amount of loft that can be achieved with the club, with low numbers indicating the least and higher numbers indicating the most loft potential.
Ladies golf clubs are much like those for the men’s game, at first glance. However, there are a few differences in basic design. For one, most ladies clubs utilize a shorter shaft. This is because, as a general rule, women tend to be shorter than men, and thus need a shorter club. Secondly, most ladies clubs use shafts that have more flex than do men’s clubs. This extra flex is meant to compensate for (again we’re generalizing) men being able to swing harder than most women.
